The following are the primary factors affecting the modal split are as follows.

  4.  Transport system characteristics 

1. Characteristics of the trips 

        a. ​​​​​​​Trips purpose:- The trip purpose  to certain extent influences the choice of mode of travel. 

         b. Trip Length:- The trip length also influences the choice of travel.

 2. Household characteristics 

     A. Income :- The income of a person is a direct determinant the expenses he is prepared to incur on a journey.  

    B. Car ownership:- car ownership determined by the income and for this reason both income and car ownership are intelated in the analysis of modal choice. 

 C. Family size and composition:- The number of persons in Family,  number of people earning,  unemployed and other socio-economic factors of family greatly influence the most choice. 

 3. Zonal characteristics 

    A. Residential Density:-  The use of public transport increases as the residential density increases. This is due to fact that the area.

   B. Concentration of workers                        

 4. Transport system characteristics 

   A. Accessibility ratio :- It is measure of the relative accessibility of that zone to all other zones with respect to mass transit network and highway network.
